Since the regionalisation of the government of Agriculture in Belgium, beginning 2004, the national studbook of the draft horses was forced to split up in a Flemish and Walloon studbook. The royal society however continues to exist as the "mother-studbook". As of now, all horses which are registered in Flanders are entered with the FBBD - the Flemish Breeders of the Belgian Drafthorse, whereas the horses which are incorporated in Walloon are entered at the EWCTB - les Eleveurs Wallons du Cheval the Trait Belge.

Structure of the Belgian studbook

The base of functioning of the FBBD remains at the 5 provincial associations which have each their own board of directors and delegate representatives to the FBBD from that.
From each provincial association in Flanders - depending on of the number of foals which are registered in that province - a number of board members is chosen which will represent the province at the FBBD. All these representatives from the provinces - who are called effective members - form together the 'general board' of the FBBD.
From this general board, a number of persons are selected to function in the governing board of the FBBD. The number of board members of each province also depends on the number of foals registered in the province.

In Flanders the effective members and board members are automatically the effective members and board members of the Royal Society (the mother studbook). The board of directors of the national studbook (the KMBT) is composed of the Flemish effective and board members, together with the effective and board members of the Walloon association (the EWCTB).
