Brabants - Colours
The three principal colours of horses are bay, black and chestnut. Different from most other races the invariable grey-factor occurs a lot by drafthorses. It's called roan (or rouan). The coat is shot through with white hairs which produce a grey appearance. Every main colour has it roan-variant: bay roan, black roan and chestnut roan. This grey-factor is invariable: by getting older the number of white hairs doesn't increase noticeably. There are also real grey horses, but this is very exceptional.
So there are 7 colours but in these there are many variations in darkness. In the overview of the colours - lower at this page - you'll notice that only black is black!
Currently, the most common color is the bay roan. At this time, the favored colors in Belgium are chestnut, red bay and black.
